Pete Rose, Major League Baseball‘s all-time hit king, has died. He was 83.

The medical examiner in Clark County, Nev., confirmed Rose’s death on Monday. No other information is available at this time.

Rose, also known as “Charlie Hustle,” played 24 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1963 to 1986. He was known for his professional playing time with the Cincinnati Reds’ “Big Red Machine,” which won back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976. He also had brief stints with the Philadelphia Phillies and Montreal Expos, earning another title with the Phillies in 1980.

Rose was a 17-time All-Star and tallied a Major League record of 4,256 career hits. He was named National League MVP in 1973, and he won two Gold Gloves and three batting titles.

After acting as the Reds’ player-manager from 1984 through the 1986 season, he managed the team full-time until 1989. On Aug. 24 of that year, Rose voluntarily accepted a lifetime ban from baseball due to accusations that he placed wagers on games while playing for and managing the Reds. After denying these accusations for years, in his 2004 autobiography “My Prison Without Bars,” Rose publicly admitted that he had gambled on baseball and on Cincinnati Reds games when he managed the team.

In 1991, the Baseball Hall of Fame voted to ban those on the “permanently ineligible” list from induction, preventing Rose’s selection chances. Rose applied for reinstatement multiple times over the years, but was always denied.

A Cincinnati native, Rose was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2016.

How to Make Your Coffee Less Acidic

Acidic coffee can have negative effects on your stomach, including discomfort, acid reflux, indigestion, and irritation of the stomach lining. Consistently drinking highly acidic coffee can also contribute to gastrointestinal problems like heartburn and gastritis. In fact, in the early 1900s, coffee was even associated with stomach ailments, prompting the creation of low-acid coffee brewing techniques.

If you love your daily cup of coffee but find that it upsets your stomach, you’re not alone. The high acidity of coffee can cause digestive discomfort for many people. But fear not, there are ways to make your coffee less acidic without sacrificing flavor. In this section, we’ll discuss five simple methods to reduce the acidity in your coffee and make it gentler on your stomach. From choosing the right beans to brewing methods and additives, we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive in!

1. Use Low-Acid Coffee Beans

  • Selecting low-acid coffee beans is crucial for decreasing the acidity in your coffee.
  • Look for beans labeled as ‘low-acid’ or ‘smooth’ to guarantee a smoother coffee experience.
  • Choose coffee beans from regions such as Brazil, Sumatra, or Peru, which are renowned for producing low-acid varieties.
  • Try out various brands and types of low-acid coffee beans to discover the one that best suits your taste preferences.

2. Try Cold Brewing

  • Choose coarsely ground coffee beans.
  • Place the coffee grounds in a large jar or pitcher.
  • Add cold, filtered water and stir.
  • Cover the container and store it in the refrigerator for 12-24 hours.
  • Strain the coffee using a fine-mesh sieve or a coffee filter.
  • Dilute the cold brew concentrate with water or milk based on your preference.

    3. Add Milk or Cream

    • For a smoother and less acidic cup of coffee, try using whole milk or cream.
    • If you prefer a non-dairy option, experiment with plant-based milk alternatives such as almond, oat, or coconut milk.
    • To add a touch of sweetness and reduce the tartness of your coffee, consider using flavored creamers.

Incorporating milk or cream into your coffee not only helps to reduce its acidity, but also adds a richness and creaminess that can make for a delightful and comforting beverage.

    4. Use a Paper Filter

    • Rinse the paper filter with hot water before adding the coffee grounds.
    • Use a paper filter designed for your specific coffee maker for best results.
    • Adjust the filter to fit properly for even extraction and a smoother taste.

    5. Choose a Dark Roast

    • Dark roast coffee beans are roasted for a longer time, resulting in a stronger, less acidic flavor profile.
    • The extended roasting process leads to the beans having a darker color and oilier surface.
    • Consider trying dark roast coffee if you prefer a bolder taste with lower acidity.

Pt. 5: 30 Tiny Diet Changes That Can Help You Lose Weight

    Continuing with Tiny Diet Changes

Cook most of your meals at home

Eating at home puts you more in control of what you eat and how much you eat. One study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity found that people who ate at least five home-cooked meals were 28 percent less likely categorized as overweight. And they were 24 percent less likely to have excess body fat than participants who ate less than three home-cooked meals per week. Here are the weight loss rules pros cheat on.

    Try measuring high-calorie ingredients

Portion control is another key element of weight loss. Part of the process is understanding an actual serving size. Measuring high-calorie ingredients will help you learn to eyeball portions. Even calories from healthy foods add up. “One of the foods people love are healthy fats, which are great,” Amari Thomsen, MS, RD, LDN, dietitian, and founder of Eat Chic Chicago says. Your definition of a handful of nuts might be four times bigger than an actual serving size, she warns.

    Swap instead of restricting

Different foods have different nutritional values, even if they sometimes have the same number of calories. And making a few simple food swaps could be beneficial for both your health and your waistline. Felicia Stoler, RD, an exercise physiologist, suggests swapping margarine for butter, corn oil for soybean oil, corn-fed proteins for grass-fed proteins, and artificial egg whites for farm fresh eggs. “Smart consumers are choosing grass-fed options because those tend to have more nutrients and fewer added hormones,” Stoler says.

    Nix your soda habit

Liquid calories could sabotage weight loss success. Soda is an obvious culprit, but fruit juice, energy drinks, alcohol, and other sugary beverages could all also add to weight gain or obesity, according to research. “Sometimes a bottle of iced tea or juice has 2.5 servings,” says Lisa Lillien, founder of HungryGirl.com and author of the book The Hungry Girl Diet. “Read labels and you’ll see it’s just not worth it.” Dr. Bazilian adds that sodas and other fruit “drinks” don’t satisfy hunger—meaning you may eat equal or more in food calories too. These are the quick weight loss tips nutrition pros swear by.

    Switch salad dressings

Fresh salads with fruits and vegetables are a great way to pack a nutritious punch. But using a high calorie dressing with lots of fat, salt, and sugar could be adding unnecessary calories. Libby Mills, MS, RDN, LDN, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, says pre-made dressings are one of the worst offenders. Instead, ask for salad on the side when eating out or use fresh lemon juice, vinegar, and olive oil for a lighter option. Here are other salad mistakes that could cause weight gain.

Anna Delvey shocked her ‘Dancing with the Stars’ partner with this one-word response

Anna Delvey and Ezra Sosa on ‘Dancing With the Stars’.

Anna Delvey has been cut from this season of “Dancing with the Stars” and she had a pretty blunt response to being eliminated.

Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, was one of the first celebrities to be cut from the competition show’s 33rd season.

She and her partner, pro Ezra Sosa, were eliminated in the Sept. 24 episode. Delvey and Sosa earned a score of 17/30 dancing to “Suddenly I See” by KT Tunstall on Tuesday evening. Though their score wasn’t the lowest — the show also takes fan votes into account — the two were still cut. Tori Spelling and her pro, Pasha Pashkov, were also sent home.

When asked what she would take from her experience on the show, Delvey deadpanned a one word response: “Nothing.”

The blunt response seemed to surprise Sosa, who raised his eyebrows and laughed.

The shows hosts, Julianna Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro, also laughed off her comment as the show credits rolled.

“You had fun, stop it, stop it,” Ribeiro replied.

Going into her second episode, Delvey had been seemingly upset by the lukewarm reception she got online from show fans last week.

“After dancing I was really happy but when I went online, I was reading all these comments and I just felt really upset,” she said in a pre-recorded segment. “I’m used to people who feel negatively about me. I get upset for a short moment of time but then I just move on.”

Delvey made headlines in 2018 after she was arrested for posing as a German heiress and swindling banks, hotels and regular people out of more than $200,000. She served two years in prison for her financial crimes and was released on parole in February 2021.

Her name really entered the American lexicon following a Netflix show based on her story that was released in 2022, “Inventing Anna.”

(Hm… Isn’t her 15 minutes of fame over yet?)

Actress Tanya Roberts Died of a UTI. How can that happen?

Actress Tanya Roberts, who is best known for her roles in the James Bond movie “A View to Kill” and the TV shows “Charlie’s Angels” and “That ’70s Show,” has died at the age of 65. Mike Pingel, Roberts’ PR rep, confirmed the news on Monday night and revealed that she died of a urinary tract infection (UTI) that led to sepsis.

“With a heavy heart I can confirm the death of Tanya Roberts last night on January 4, 2021 around 9:30 p.m. PT at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA,” said a statement posted to Roberts’ website.

Pingel added that Roberts’s cause of death was from a urinary tract infection, which had spread to her kidney, gallbladder, liver and bloodstream.

Roberts’ sudden death at age 65 was unexpected, and her reported cause of death has added to the shock. After all, a UTI, which can affect any part of the urinary tract, including the bladder, urethra, ureters and kidneys, is an extremely common infection. According to the Cleveland Clinic, it occurs in 1 out of 5 women at some point in their lifetime. (Men and children can get them too, although it’s less common in those groups.)

The usual cause of a UTI is bacteria that are normally found in the bowel, like E. coli. Most of the time, the bacteria gets flushed out during urination before it gets to the bladder, but sometimes it causes an infection. If you have a UTI, you’ll probably experience a burning sensation when you pee, and frequent or intense urges to pee (even when you have little urine to pass).

In most cases, a UTI is successfully treated with antibiotics, but a smaller number of people find themselves with a more serious infection. An untreated bladder infection can spread to the kidneys and can even end up in the bloodstream, where it can lead to a condition called bacteremia (the presence of bacteria in the blood), or cause a complication known as sepsis.

Sepsis happens when the body launches an extreme response to an infection. A simple infection can trigger a “chain reaction” in the body, and if left untreated, sepsis — “a life-threatening medical emergency” — can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death.

The symptoms of sepsis include fever and chills, shortness of breath, high heart rate or low blood pressure, confusion or disorientation, extreme pain or discomfort and clammy or sweaty skin, per the CDC.

It’s important to remember that what happened to Roberts is “not very common,” as Phillips said, although urinary tract infections may account for up to 40% of the 1.7 million sepsis cases that happen every year. But it’s also wise to be aware of the warning signs of a UTI and seek medical attention if you have any of the symptoms, as early detection is crucial.

Also, prevention is key. Wiping genitals from front to back, staying hydrated, avoiding douches and female deodorants, using a lubricant during sex and changing pads and tampons frequently are all lifestyle changes the Cleveland Clinic recommends for avoiding UTIs.

    Mother Nature’s Weather Makers

Mother Nature’ is a way of personifying nature and referring to nature as a ‘mother’ because nature is life-giving like a mother. It is not considered an actual person. Its origins may stem from Greek Mythology and the story of Demeter who is a goddess related to nature.

In North America, we are influenced by certain weather patterns. Read along as The Old Farmer’s almanac describes the interaction of ocean waters and the atmosphere, and how it affects our weather.

Pt. 4: 30 Tiny Diet Changes That Can Help You Lose Weight

    Balance your meals

Cutting out food groups is not the healthiest weight loss solution. “When you eliminate either fats or carbohydrates, you’re probably eating way too much of what’s left over,” says Kristin Kirkpatrick, MS, RD, manager of wellness nutrition services at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute. For example, if you cut out fat, you could overdo it on carbohydrates or vice versa. Instead, Kirkpatrick recommends balancing your meals and having one whole grain carbohydrate at each meal and opting for low-fat dairy products and lean meats.

    Use a large fork

It might seem counterintuitive to eat with a large fork, but a study published in the Journal of Consumer Research found that restaurant diners who used big forks ate significantly less than those eating with small forks. Researchers believe using a big fork gives people the idea that they are filling up since larger forks hold more food, CBS News reports.

    Or eat with your hands

Eating finger foods takes more time leading to a more satisfying experience, Amy Gorin, RDN, owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in Jersey City, New Jersey says. “I’ll often include finger foods in my clients’ meal plans, as it’s not just kids who love to eat with their hands,” she says. Some good options include lightly salted edamame, hummus, whole-grain crackers, sliced mushrooms, and sliced bell peppers.

Splurge for the pre-chopped and pre-washed produce

If taking the time to slice and dice vegetables holds you back from eating them, then invest in the pre-chopped or pre-washed vegetables. Rene Ficek, RD, the lead nutrition expert at Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating says fresh produce is the cornerstone of healthy nutrition—and using pre-chopped vegetables could cut your cooking time in half. “Plus, keeping sliced veggies and prepared dips like hummus are great to have on hand at all times,” Fieck adds.

Always keep healthy snacks on hand

Eating healthy is easier if you prepare for the expected and the unexpected. That’s why Lara Felton, RDN, head of the dietary team at mobile nutrition app ShopWell recommends preparing filling snacks for work or school. “I find that people often make poor food choices because they get so hungry, they just grab whatever is close,” she says. “If you have something healthy already tucked in your bag or briefcase, you’ll save yourself the extra calories and eater’s remorse.” She recommends packing snacks that have a balance of carbs, protein, and healthy fat to keep your energy levels up and hunger at bay, but nothing too perishable or fragile.
