Fire Prevention Week

When is Fire Prevention Week?

Fire Prevention Week always takes place during the week that includes Oct. 9. In 2026, Fire Prevention week is Oct. 4-10.

Fire Prevention Week is led by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to raise public awareness about fire safety and prevention. With support from fire departments across the country, the initiative includes educational events, school visits and community outreach, all backed by resources and promotional materials available from the NFPA.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has announced “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower” as the theme for Fire Prevention Week 2026.

Lithium ion battery safety focus

The campaign will focus on safe charging, storage and use of devices powered by rechargeable lithium ion batteries, including phones, tablets, laptops, tools, toys, e bikes and scooters.

NFPA said damaged or incorrectly charged batteries can overheat, catch fire or explode.

Safe charging advice

Key safety messages include using the charger supplied with a device or one approved by the manufacturer, charging on hard flat surfaces and avoiding beds, couches or pillows where heat can build up.

Users are advised to stop using devices that become very hot, swell, smoke or smell unusual, and to unplug devices once fully charged.

About Fire Prevention Week

NFPA has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week since 1922. According to the National Archives and Records Administration’s Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. The President of the United States has signed a proclamation declaring a national observance during that week every year since 1925. Visit www.firepreventionweek.org for more safety information.
