Waiting for My Train to Come

Looking west from La Plata, Mo. at sunset.

My train? The Southwest Chief. The Southwest Chief is a long-distance passenger train operated by Amtrak on a 2,265-mile (3,645 km) route between Chicago and Los Angeles. It travels thru the Midwest and Southwest via Kansas City, Albuquerque, and Flagstaff. Also, continues thru Kingman, Ca and eventually, into Los Angeles.

The route is one of Amtrak’s most scenic, with views of the Painted Desert and the Red Cliffs of Sedona, and the plains of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado. However, the journey from Chicago does take more that 43 hours, stopping at 31 stations along the way. It is well worth the time spent on board.
