I tutor adults who come to the U.S. who exhibit various stages of English literacy. The number one problem they tell me they have is translating what I teach them into their native language, then back into English. Very confusing for most of them. I saw this post and wondered if my students might benefit from it. I would appreciate any comments you may have after reading.
Here are some ways to train your brain to think faster in English:
- Learn vocabulary in phrases: Start with phrases instead of individual words, and use the vocabulary as soon as you can.
- Talk to yourself: Talking to yourself in English helps you remember words and grammatical structures, and use them to form sentences.
- Role-play: Role-play conversations and situations with yourself.
- Record yourself: Record yourself speaking in English.
- Find an English-speaking friend or partner: Having an English-speaking friend or partner can help you improve your English.
- Exercise: Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which can help with focus and attention.
- Learn a new language: Learning a new language can help train your brain to think faster and fine-tune your processing skills.
- Get enough sleep: Getting enough sleep can help you stay alert and react quickly.
- Meditate: Meditation can help you focus on the present moment, instead of getting distracted by what’s novel or threatening.
