World Cup Soccer: Argentina near full-strength for World Cup final against France

After 63 matches across 28 days, the two best teams – and two best players – from the 2022 FIFA World Cup are left standing.

On one side are the defending tournament champions. Kylian Mbappé and France have been unstoppable in Qatar as they attempt to win their second straight World Cup. Les Bleus took care of business to win Group D and eliminated Poland, England and Morocco en route to their second straight World Cup final.

If they want to lift the trophy again, they will have beat perhaps the best player in the history of the sport.

Lionel Messi is set for his last ever World Cup match after guiding Argentina to its second final in eight years. The team lost the 2014 final to Germany in extra time and was eliminated by France in the 2018 round of 16, setting the stage perfectly for Messi’s World Cup sendoff.

Argentina needed to overcome an opening loss to Saudi Arabia in group play. La Albiceleste bounced back with wins over Mexico and Poland before advancing past Australia, the Netherlands and Croatia in the knockout rounds.

It’s Mbappé versus Messi with everything on the line. What more is left to be said?

2022 World Cup

Perhaps the world’s biggest sporting event gets underway this month, with the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. 48 teams have their sights set on soccer’s biggest prize, with the group stage scheduled to begin on Sunday, November 20, when Qatar takes on Ecuador in the traditional opening match featuring the host country.

Note: How to pronounce “Qatar.”

They’ve pronounced it “kuh-TAR” and “KA-tar” and “cutter.” The Brits occasionally go for “kuh-TAAH.” Some Americans have done their homework and still somehow settled on “cut-tar.” The accepted pronunciation “would sound like saying: Kuh-TAR.” The English word closest to the native pronunciation might actually be “guitar.”

To continue, the World Cup is being played in the middle of the club season due to the weather in Qatar, forcing leagues around the world to go into a midseason break while some of their best players descend on Qatar for the World Cup.

This year’s World Cup has no shortage of storylines. On the pitch, this is the last World Cup for Lionel Messi, who has been underwhelming at times this year for Paris Saint-Germain. There is the return of Christian Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac event during the 2021 Euros while playing for Denmark. Canada, who qualified for their first World Cup since 1986 by winning CONCACAF, features defender Alphonso Davies, who can impact the game anywhere on the field.
