Who Invented Fathers Day?

Father’s Day is held on the third Sunday in June to celebrate and honor fathers. And while the first Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1914 after President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation making Mother’s Day the second Sunday in May, Father’s Day did not become official until 1966.
The Story of Father’s Day
Who invented Father’s Day? While there are at least two or three different people credited with that honor, most historians consider Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington State to be the first person to have proposed the holiday in 1910.
Dodd’s father was a Civil War veteran named William Smart. Her mother died giving birth to her sixth child, which left William Smart a widower with five children to raise on his own. When Sonora Dodd married and had her own children, she realized what a tremendous job her father had done in raising her and her siblings as a single parent.
After hearing her pastor give a sermon about the newly established Mother’s Day, Sonora Dodd suggested to him that there should also be a Father’s Day and proposed that the date be June 5, her father’s birthday. However, her pastor needed more time to prepare a sermon, so he moved the date to June 19, the third Sunday of the month.
Father’s Day Traditions
One of the early ways established to celebrate Father’s Day was to wear a flower. Sonora Dodd suggested wearing a red rose if your father was still living and wearing a white flower if your father was deceased. Later, presenting him with a special activity, gift, or a card became commonplace.
Dodd spent years campaigning for Father’s Day to be celebrated nationally. She commissioned the help of men’s goods manufacturers and others who might benefit from a Father’s Day, such as the makers of ties, tobacco pipes, and other products that would make for a suitable gift for fathers.
In 1938, a Father’s Day Council was founded by the New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers to help with the widespread promotion of Father’s Day. Still, the public continued to resist the idea. Many Americans believed an official Father’s Day would be just another way for retailers to make money since the popularity of Mother’s Day boosted the sale of gifts for mothers.
Making Father’s Day Official
As early as 1913, bills had been submitted to congress to recognize Father’s Day nationally. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson pushed to make Father’s Day official, but couldn’t muster enough support from Congress. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge would also recommend that Father’s Day be observed, but did not go so far as to issue a national proclamation.
In 1957, Margaret Chase Smith, a senator from Maine, wrote a proposal that accused Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while only honoring mothers. It wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson finally signed a presidential proclamation that made the third Sunday of June, Father’s Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon made Father’s Day a permanent national holiday.
What Gifts Fathers Want
Forget about snazzy ties, cologne, or car parts. What fathers really want is family time. According to a Fox News report, “About 87 percent of dads would rather have dinner with the family. Most fathers don’t want another tie, as 65 percent said they would rather get nothing than another tie.” And before you go running out to buy men’s cologne, only 18 percent of dads said they want some kind of personal care product. And only 14 percent said they want automotive accessories.

How to silence every single spam call on your iPhone without buying any apps

There’s no getting around it: spam calls are incredibly annoying and, at times, seem absolutely endless. From fake calls about social security benefits to fraudulent calls about expiring car warranties, scammers in recent years have only become more brazen and sophisticated when it comes to robocalling any and everyone.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that your iPhone comes with a few built-in features that can help you eliminate these spam calls, or at the very least, keep them from constantly interrupting you throughout the day.
To get started, all you have to do is go to Settings > Phone where you should then see a toggle for “Silence Unknown Callers.” If you turn this feature on, every call from an unknown number will be silenced and automatically sent to voicemail. And on the off-chance an incoming call from an unknown number is actually legitimate, the call will still appear on your list of recent calls.
With the feature turned on, the only calls that will actually ring include numbers from your list of contacts, numbers that appear in your list of outgoing calls (which is helpful if, for example, you recently dialed a customer support number), and numbers from Siri Suggestions, which is to say numbers that iOS thinks may be associated with someone you know.
Now if a specific person or entity is calling you non-stop, which at a certain point becomes harassment, you can specifically block their number. To do so, simply go to Settings > Phone and scroll down to the Blocked Contacts setting. Once you tap that, you can hit “Add New” whereupon you can select which contact you’d like to block. Once selected, no phone calls, messages, emails, or incoming FaceTime alerts will be able to come through.
In light of the above, there may be some hope on the horizon. According to RoboKiller — an app designed to fight spam calls — the total number of spam calls in May of 2021 went down by 5%. And while this isn’t a huge decrease, spam calls have been steadily rising over the last six months.
Incidentally, RoboKiller — which you can get for less than $2 from the App Store — might be a worthy investment.
MarketWatch notes:
RoboKiller blocks millions of telemarketers and robocalls from ringing (so you won’t even know those callers called) even if they are changing their numbers. The unique thing with RoboKiller is that it has an AnswerBot answer the phone for you and then waste the marketers’ time talking to them; you later get to listen to recordings of calls… The company has a list of 500 million phone scams that it will block for you, and you can adjust the level of call blocking. It can also protect from many text scams.

Slow and relaxing, train travel is one of the best ways of getting around if you have the time to spare. Some of the most breathtaking views in the world can be enjoyed from behind a train window and you don’t necessarily have to shell out the big bucks for an epic ride. Here we take a look at the world’s most scenic train journeys that you won’t have to splash out on.
San Luis Obispo to San Diego, California, USA
One-way fares start from $62 and the full journey takes just over eight hours. Normally, the route offers 13 daily round-trip services between San Diego and Los Angeles, five to Santa Barbara and two to San Luis Obispo so travelers can be flexible with their itinerary, however, Pacific Surfliner is currently operating a reduced service.

Glasgow to Mallaig, Scotland, UK
For an even more authentic Harry Potter experience, there’s the The Jacobite steam train – it’s the one used in the movies. This year the train is scheduled to run Monday to Friday from early April to late October between Fort William and Mallaig. An adult return ticket costs $63. Otherwise, regular ScotRail trains run every day and one-way off-peak fare is around $38.
Christchurch to Greymouth, New Zealand
Perhaps one of the most stunning features along the TranzAlpine’s route is traversing the snow-capped mountains of Arthur’s Pass National Park. The scenery then quickly turns subtropical as the train continues its journey through the west coast’s rainforests and one of the best experiences on the train is stepping out on the open-air viewing car.
Williams to Grand Canyon Village, Arizona, USA
The trip on the Grand Canyon Railway begins in Williams, a small town 30 miles (48km) west of Flagstaff. Meandering its way through ponderosa pine forests and open prairie, the train terminates in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park before heading back to Williams. On the way, passengers are encouraged to get into the spirit of the Old West and enjoy the musical entertainment, cowboy characters and other surprises.
Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi, Tanzania and Zambia
The trains, which have sleeping cars and a restaurant car, provide a safari experience on a budget. Prices start from $31 for a one-way, third-class seat while the first-class sleeper is $45. The TAZARA (Tanzania & Zambia Railway Authority) route is a great way of experiencing a safari without splashing out. The train travels from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to the Zambian town of Kapiri Mposhi through the Selous game reserve, offering a chance to spot elephants, lions, giraffes and more. The journey covers 1,150 miles (1,852km) and takes just under 48 hours to complete.
Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, Vietnam
When traveling on The Reunification Express line (also known as the North-South Railway) you don’t have to choose between seeing historic cities, charming towns and spectacular coastline – this journey has it all. Traversing more than a thousand miles between Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City in the south, the route is one of Asia’s most popular train rides. The full journey takes over two days but you can hop on and off at destinations like Hue and Da Nang.
