Citrus Fruit Essential Oils

Essential oils derived from the citrus fruits contain a substance called d-limonene which is toxic to ants but harmless to humans. Lemon, Orange, and grapefruit essential oils all contain d-limonene which makes them very effective to get rid of ants from your home or garden.

How to use? Soak a cotton ball with any of these oils and place inside your cabinets, cupboards and in the corners where ants may travel. You may also soak a cotton ball and use it to coat baseboards and ants entry points. You may need to repeat this process at least three times per week until all ants are gone.

Note: When mixing essential oils with water, a little vodka can be added to help with the distribution/ emulsification of oil and water solution. However, if you do not have Vodka just shake well and spray as needed.

Make a DIY ants spray

Combine 1 cup of water, 1 cup of vinegar and 10 drops of peppermint or spearmint essential oils. Spray on all visible ants and all of the areas that the ants will traverse. Spray all potential hiding holes, cracks, and crevices.

Citrus Vinegar Solution

Ants and lots of other insects hate the strong scent of vinegar. Both white and apple cider vinegar is good for repelling ants. The scent of vinegar also masks their scent trails, hence they will be confused and thrown off track. For a much better effect, add some citrus peel to the vinegar and let it seep for two weeks. Alternatively, you may use 20 drops of orange, grapefruit, lemon or peppermint essential oils. Clove oil can also be used but only about 8 to 10 drops as it is very strong.

Quick Lemon Juice spray

This works just in the same way as vinegar. It will need some assistance with essential oils. Use 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup lemon juice. Add 20 drops of peppermint or orange essential oils. If you have clove essential oil use 5 to 10 drops as it is very strong. Give the mix a good shake and use to spray all visible ants trails, baseboards, and entryways.

Coffee Protection

Coffee grounds are great for your garden. It does not kill the ants but it repels them. It will also keep away a lot of other pests from your plants and provide added nutrients for the soil. To use– just sprinkle all over your garden and around your crops. Use some in your indoor flower pots also.

Baking Soda and Powdered Sugar

Mix powdered sugar and baking soda in a 1:1 ratio. Sprinkle in the areas where ants travel. The sugar will attract the ants and they will eat all that they see as the baking soda and sugar looks similar. Then it will kill them by reacting with the acid in their digestive system and they will explode.

Baking Soda Fizz

Sprinkle some baking soda in the colony of ants and then spray some white vinegar on it. It will fizz and destroy all that is in its path. It will be like a mini volcano for them.

Ground Citrus Peel

Since ants are not so fond of anything citrus, keep back the skin of your citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. Dry the peels and grind them up and use it to block entryways of the ants. Mix it in the soil of your potted plants and in your gardens to repel ants.

Citrus Peel Spray

Put 1 cup water and 1 cup vinegar to boil. Add 1 cup of citrus peel, cover the pot and turn off the stove and let it seep overnight. Strain and pour in a spray bottle and use to keep ants away. Spray on baseboards and in the entryways that ants may traverse. Repeat the process three times per week until all ants are gone.

Lemon Vinegar Ants Spray

Mix equal amounts of white vinegar and lemon juice in a spray bottle, and gently shake. Spray around windows and door frames to stop ants from entering. Spray ants spotted in the home to eradicate them. This solution is suitable for kitchen countertops and areas where food is prepared.
